English at Bundaberg SHS
Poetry, plays, films and novels are very much a part of English at Bundaberg SHS and we are proud of our tradition of academic excellence. We offer programs that prepare our students for an academic life as well as the workforce, but more importantly, enable them to function well in an increasingly complex world. Being able to communicate well – to read, write, speak and think about the ways language is used gives people power and control over their lives. We emphasise the importance of mastering the basics of language while encouraging students to explore the exciting world of modern literature and contemporary film and media. We encourage the development of computer literacy skills through the use of our computer labs and we encourage participation in debating, public speaking, literary competitions and excursions. Year 10 students are offered alternative pathways that prepare them for Senior English or vocational English. Our English results show that in both Senior and Junior English, we are performing better than the state average.
Subject Descriptions
Junior English
Years 8 and 9 Students will participate in a combined English/SOSE (Study Of Society and Environment) program in both Year 8 and Year 9. The emphasis will be on developing literacy skills in a SOSE context. Students will continue to study related literature and will address both English, SOSE and Technology outcomes. In Year 8, some students are offered additional literacy classes instead of LOTE (Languages Other Than English). Everday English will be available to Year 9 students who are experiencing literacy difficulties.
Year 10 Year 10 is an introduction to Senior and three strands of English are offered. For students who are achieving at a high level we offer Extension English which prepares students for Senior (Board) English. Core English is for students who could choose either Vocational English or Senior English. Everyday English is offered to students who are experiencing difficulties in English and need additional literacy skills development and who will not be doing Senior (Board) English.
Senior English
Board English Senior (Board) English is an academic English subject with emphasis on the study of literature. This subject must be studied by students who are OP eligible or who need a Sound Achievement in English to get into a TAFE course. Care must be taken when selecting this course because there is a considerable amount of reading and writing involved. Students must have achieved at least a good sound achievement in Year 10 Junior English (not Everyday English) to be able to succeed in this subject. Students who have not passed Year 10 Junior English should consider Vocational English.
Vocational English This subject is for students who are not OP eligible. It focuses on preparing students for the workplace and as such is very practical and not concerned with the study of literature. There is continuing emphasis on developing literacy skills but in a workplace context. Students who successfully obtain the embedded Vocational Competencies will be eligible for Certificate II in Communication for the Workplace. This is an additional qualification that appears on the student’s Senior Certificate. |
