Traineeship course title: Certificate II in Business
When did you begin your traineeship?
I began on the 9th May 2007 and completed my qualification on 4th June this year.
How did you find out about your traineeship?
The position was advertised at school. Firstly, Mrs Curd contacted the Business Education staff at Bundy High and asked for recommendations, and I was recommended by both Mrs Hobbin and Mrs Vollmerhause. Then I had to go through the application process, which involved presenting a resume and then attending an interview.
Who was your employer?
Sarina Russo Job Access
What were your work days and hours of employment?
Instead of coming to school on Wednesdays I worked from 8 am to 4.40 pm.
What were your work duties?
Administrative duties, which included answering telephones, preparing information folders, filing, creating Excel spreadsheets, utilising EA 3000 (a Centrelink–run program) and assisting my supervisor.
What kinds of skills and knowledge did you pick up because of your traineeship?
I gained experience in working in an office environment and was able to enhance my computer skills while there. As well as that, I believe I’ve acquired a bettter understanding of the employment industry and what employment agencies have to offer.
What sort of difficulties did you have trying to deal with schoolwork and your traineeship responsibilities at the same time?
Because I was absent from classes every Wednesday I had to find ways to catch up on what I had missed. As I’m an OP – eligible student it is critical that I maintain a good standard in my results. I also attend TAFE every second Thursday on the Seniors’ “day out”. By the end of the year I’ll have completed Certificate II Tourism Operations, Certificate III Meetings and Operations and Certificate III Tourism Information Centre. With this additional workload, I’ve really had to manage my time more effectively.
What did you enjoy most about your traineeship (apart from getting some time off school to do it)?
I appreciated the opportunity to meet new people outside the school environment and to learn new skills. It was nice being paid to work and gain a qualification at the same time.
From what you’ve seen so far, what are some major differences between the “world of work” and an ordinary school day?
A big difference is the work hours, because it isn’t just a simple school day. Having to start at 8.00 am was hard for me. Another major difference is how you are treated as an adult and have certain expectations placed upon you.
Describe one interesting experience you had while you were “on the job”.
One interesting experience for me involved attending a function at Burnett Riverside Hotel where I actually met Sarino Russo (the woman behind the company). She was extremely positive towards the idea of school-based traineeships and made me feel very welcome. Sarina is a great motivator.
What do you think will be the main benefits of your traineeship?
The experience and skills I have obtained will be beneficial in any future employment. Not only was I able to meet new people but I also gained contacts in the workplace. |
