Dear members of our school community
It is hard to believe that the end of Semester 1 is approaching however, there is still very important assessment to be completed for most students and a great deal remaining on the calendar.
It is important as parents and carers that you support the learning and assessment process for your children. Talking to them about their learning and their assessment, supporting their time management and seeking support from their teachers where necessary are all reasonable actions that you can take. If there is any time you feel as though you need support please contact the school.
As you will see below our students have been involved in a broad range of activities and events in recent weeks and as usual they have done us proud. We have seen a number of school teams and individual students performing incredibly well in various activities and respective competitions. Certainly, High School Musical is a huge event for our school and I would like to acknowledge the tremendous work of staff and students in preparing with outstanding commitment for the performances we will see at the end of this week. If you have not yet booked your tickets please head to the Moncrieff Theatre website.
Please continue to engage with our school communication tools to keep up to date with the latest school information.
ANZAC Day
Our students and staff were involved in a number of community Anzac Day ceremonies across the Bundaberg District this year. At the Service in Bundaberg, we had around 100 students present, special mention must go to Georgia Herbener who was invited to participate in the Service to read a poem on behalf of our school. Georgia did a beautiful job in front of the large crowd in attendance.
Parent/Teacher/Student Interviews
We thank all those Parents/students who attended our Teacher interviews this term. Reports were that it was a well-attended event and we have received very positive feedback. This is always a great opportunity for parents and teachers to meet and support our students on their pathways.
Bundaberg Netball
Over the Easter holidays Melanie Currie, Carolyn Young and eight Netball players from Bundy High represented Bundaberg Netball at the 2023 Netball Qld State Championships and made the Grand Final, receiving Silver!
CQU Business Challenge
Ben Christensen, Dylan Hensler-Kimmins, Kingslee Jenkins and Ella Cislowski competed at CQU in the Business Challenge against eight other Bundaberg School teams and over twenty other school teams competing online via video link. While they didn't win they worked brilliantly as a team and represented BSHS with pride.
Trivia Night
The Arts department hosted a fun night of trivia to help raise funds for the upcoming school musical. The theme of the night was “Back to School" with one team going all out, to come as a group of Hairy Net Ballers, while most chose to come dressed as school teachers!
A massive thanks to all, who attended and supported the night. Tickets are now on sale at the Moncrieff for Bundy High's presentation of Disney's High School Musical On Stage. Three shows only: Friday 9 June in the evening and Saturday 10 June during the day at 1:00pm and one in the evening at 7:00pm.
Surf Therapy Program
Our students at Ignite have been taking part in a pilot program for surf therapy with the Stoked Surf School. It was a great to see the students step outside their comfort zone and take head on the challenge of an open water activity. The surf coaches were amazing and the smiles and laughs from the students were fantastic to see (even if the water temp was a bit chilly). Surfing is a physical activity which builds strength and balance, as well as students' confidence. This program combines surfing and structured activities that promote psychological, physical and psychosocial well-being.
Indigenous News
During Week 5 a number of our First Nation students joined with other First Nation students from Kepnock, North, Rosedale and Isis State High School to watch a performance by Sean Choolburra. Sean Choolburra is recognised as one of Australia's funniest and most enduring Aboriginal comedians. His comedy is created from a wide variety of life time experiences, stories, and observations, which has the staff and students laughing out loud. Our students behaviour was commended by staff from other schools and the bus driver thanked them for being so polite and well mannered.
Deadly Choices
In Indigenous slang, if something is 'deadly' it is great. As such a Deadly Choice is a good choice and we encourage our students to make deadly choices every day. Deadly choices have been running this term for students in Years 7, 8 and 9.
Students and staff discuss topics such as Leadership, Chronic illnesses, Mental Health and part of their program also involves physical activities. In Week 6, Mick Gray, (our previous SBPO) was invited to join the Deadly Choices group to speak with our Years 7 and 8 students about chronic diseases.
Mick is currently working as a paramedic with Qld Ambulance Services, he spoke with the students about diseases such as diabetes, discussing pre and post colonisation and the effects on First Nation people. He was then invited to the Indigenous Centre and was beaten multiple times in games of UNO with our students.
BDSSS Cross Country
Forty of BSHS fittest and finest athletes competed in the annual BDSSS Cross Country hosted by Gin Gin SHS. Our athletes were gallant taking on the mighty “Heartbreak Hill" and as a result, BSHS finished in third place overall. Congratulations and best wishes to the following students who have gained selection in the BDSSS Cross Country team that travels to Hervey Bay on the Tuesday 6 June.

Dolphins NRL X Bundaberg SHS Rugby League Program Excursion
Over the past two days our Year 9 and 10 Rugby League program students took part in memorable and highly educational Dolphins NRL Excursion to Redcliffe. Starting the tour at Kayo Stadium, the students were given an inside look into life as an NRL player. With a behind the scenes tour of the training and playing facility. Former NRL player and current Dolphins NRL Wellbeing staff member Sam Tagataese spoke to the students about finding your purpose in life and channelling that purpose into leading a life of fulfilment doing things that you love and are passionate about. Sam also spoke about the importance of accessing support when needed.
Students also listened to presentations from Head of Game Development Shane Morris and Head of Sponsorship Glen Walker. Shane spoke about professionalism and discipline and its importance not just in sport but within life in general. Glen, a Bundy boy himself who has now worked at the Collingwood Magpies as well as the Dolphins, spoke about self-image, reputation/how you portray yourself to others and having the courage to chase your life goals.
Stem Girl Power Camp
Year 10 student Imogen Sell joined fifty-nine Year 10 students and eleven teachers were selected to participate in the Department of Education's 2023 STEM Girl Power Camp, which was held on 15-19 May in Brisbane. Students travelled from all over Queensland, from Thursday Island to the Gold Coast, to represent their school in Brisbane, where they participated in a variety of events, innovative STEM workshops and networking opportunities with experts from science, technology, engineering and mathematics fields. This year for the first time two students and one teacher from Papua New Guinea also attended the camp.
Students developed their understanding of STEM and its importance to our society, as well as their leadership, critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and communication skills. The 2023 STEM Ambassadors will now collaborate in their regions to plan and deliver a STEM event to celebrate National Science Week in August 2023 during Term 3, which aims to encourage others to consider STEM subjects and careers.
Career Expo
Years 10, 11 and 12 students attended the Bundaberg Careers Expo on Wednesday 24 May. The Career Expo is crucial in assisting our young people in our community to have the information and tools required to navigate life after school. This opportunity allows students an opportunity to explore their career aspirations.

QMEA brings many opportunities for our students, developing students' knowledge and experiences in the resources sector, focusing on VET and STEM related careers. This is achieved through programs run within our school with the support of our sponsor Evolution Mining. Year 10 students interested in a trade career attended the Tradies for the Day program.
